FAQs About Pet Vaccinations at Coronado Veterinary Hospital

Here at Coronado veterinary hospital, we offer pet vaccinations for dogs and cats in order to help keep your pet healthy. Here are a few of the common questions we receive from pet parents about vaccinations.pet vaccinations faq from your veterinarian in coronado

Why does my pet need vaccinations?

Vaccinations for pets work very similarly to those given to humans. When your pet is inoculated against a certain disease, your pet's immune system creates antibodies to help protect your pet if he or she is exposed to the particular illness. This can result in your pet experiencing fewer symptoms of the disease or the disease not lasting as long. Some vaccines even prevent the particular illness.

What are core Coronado pet vaccinations?

Core Coronado pet vaccinations are recommended for all pets, regardless of their lifestyle. All dogs and cats must receive a rabies vaccination, and those vaccinations must be kept up-to-date by law. In addition, all dogs should receive distemper, parvovirus, canine hepatitis and adenovirus type 2 vaccines. Cats should receive feline distemper, feline herpes, and calicivirus.

What are non-core pet vaccinations?

Non-core pet vaccines are recommended for pets who are at high-risk for acquiring certain illnesses. Generally, these pets spend a lot of time outdoors and/or around other animals. Non-core vaccines for dogs include parainfluenza, canine influenza, bordetella, Lyme disease, and leptospirosis. Non-core vaccines for cats include feline leukemia and bordetella.

Does my dog or cat need different pet vaccinations in Coronado as he or she ages?

Puppies and kittens need a different vaccination schedule than adult dogs and cats because they do not yet have fully developed immune systems. For this reason, puppies and kittens receive a series of initial pet vaccinations in Coronado, usually three to four weeks apart, starting at six weeks of age.

Dogs and cats over 16 weeks of age at the time of their first vaccination appoint typically need fewer initial doses in order to be protected. Once the initial vaccinations are given, your dog or cat will need boosters in 12 months, and then additional inoculations as recommended, usually every three years.

What pet vaccines does your animal hospital offer?

Our animal hospital offers rabies, distemper, feline calicivirus, leptospirosis and bordetella vaccinations as well as other core and non-core vaccines. If your pet needs a specific vaccine, feel free to call us and inquire. If we don't have it, we may be able to order it.

Are there any side effects associated with receiving a pet vaccination?

Pet vaccinations are generally safe. The most common side effect is a mild discomfort at the injection site. If your pet develops a rash or hives or experiences diarrhea or vomiting, you should call our veterinary right away for care instructions.
