Parasite Prevention: An Integral Component of Pet Wellness

At Coronado Veterinary Hospital, our veterinarians emphasize the importance of protecting pets from parasites. Preventing parasites is not only the healthy choice for your pet, but will also save both you and your dog or cat the stress and discomfort of dealing with a parasite infestation or infection. The saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, truly applies when it comes to parasite prevention. Parasites cause cats and dogs discomfort, pain, and can severely damage their health, even leading to death. The cost of preventative medications and collars is also much lower than that of treating a pet already infected with parasites.

Our veterinaries recommend preventative medications that protect pets from a wide variety of parasites including heartworm, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites.

Intestinal Parasites

Puppies and kittens contract intestinal parasites like tapeworm, hookworm, roundworm, coccidia, and whipworm from their mothers prior to birth and also while nursing. Speak to our veterinarian about putting your puppy or kitten on a de-worming schedule and your adult pet on a monthly preventative medication.

Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are more than just an itchy nuisance for dogs and cats; they carry and are responsible for transmitting several deadly diseases to pets including leptospirosis, Lyme disease, and Bartonella. Thankfully, keeping your pets safe from fleas and ticks is simple when using an effective preventative medication. You can also limit the amount your pet is exposed by keeping your yard free from excess brush and preventing your pet from interacting with other infected animals, both wild and domestic.

Heartworm is probably the most important parasite to prevent in animals because symptoms usually do not appear until it is too late for treatment and because treatment is often either extremely risk or not possible for most pets. Once infected with heartworm, the parasite will eventually lead your pet to an early death. Heartworm is transferred to your pet by infected mosquitoes. So, the parasite is most prevalent in areas with large populations of mosquitos. Speak to your veterinarian before administering heartworm preventatives to your pet, as doing so with an infected pet could be fatal.
